The Curriculum Grammar and Writing (Levels 1–6) Grammar and writing courses provide learners with the skills necessary for written coommunication from basic to advanced levels. These courses offer students the opportunity to develop, practice, and apply the grammar structures of English and to perform simple to advanced writing tasks. Students gain mastery in the use of major structures of the language as well as the mechanics of writing necessary for personal, academic, and business communication. Listening and Speaking (Levels 1–5) Listening and speaking courses help students improve their listening comprehension and oral communication. In addition, students have opportunities to learn about Aamerican culture and share their own cultures with one another. These courses provide opportunities for students to refine their pronunciation skills and increase their control of the English language for personal, academic, and business communication. Reading and Vocabulary (Levels 1–6) Reading and vocabulary classes help students improve their reading comprehension and enhance their English vocabulary. Dynamic communicative practice is provided for students, exposing them to the uses of language in a variety of relevant contexts. Emphasis is on reading comprehension, vocabulary expansion, the relationship of meaning to grammatical form, development of practical library skills, word analysis, paraphrasing, summarizing and dictionary use. Other Courses In addition to these courses, the program periodically offers classes in TOEFL preparation and pronunciation. | Intercultural Events The Intensive English Program sponsors a variety of intercultural activities for its students and the college to promote diversity and multicultural understanding and to create a community for the students. Ethnic Lunch/Dinner: Students, their families, and faculty come together twice a semester to share food and music native to their countries. Talent Show: Aan event where students are given the opportunity to showcase their talents. Celebrate Success Ceremony: Student achievements are acknowledged at this end of semester ceremony with an outstanding student from each class receiving a certificate and prizes. Diversity Student Newsletter: This program sponsored newsletter contains students' stories, essays, and artwork. The newsletter is published once a semester and distributed to ESL students, faculty, college administrators, and the community as well as posted on the Intensive English Program website. International Education Week: Lone Star College-Kingwood observes this week in celebration of the diverse cultures represented by our students and to promote multicultural understanding and international education. Students are actively involved in the planning and implementation of the activities for this week. Intercultural Student Organization (ISO): The ISO promotes diversity and multicultural understanding both on campus and in the community. Membership is open to all students regardless of their ethnicity. The Intensive English Program and the ISO hold a variety of cultural events that allow students to share their cultures and traditions and to educate their fellow students and community. |
