Service Learning

Service Learning
Service Learning is a teaching method which combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility. Service Learning programs involve students in organized community service that addresses local needs, while developing their academic skills, sense of civic responsibility, and commitment to the community.

Service learning is a unique way to learn, serve, and teach. Service learning holds up a mirror for us to see ourselves, a microscope for us to examine our society, and binoculars for us to see what lies ahead.

Goals for Service Learning

  • Students will gain a better understanding of self and their involvement in the community.

  • Students will be more aware of issues in the community and develop a sense of responsibility for addressing those issues.

  • Students will be exposed to diverse communities and include dialogue about preconceived notions regarding diversity.

  • Students will have a community service experience within the class group in order to develop classroom cohesiveness.

  • Students will discuss their own sense of civic responsibility and plan for future involvement.

Creating the citizens of tomorrow

I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”
