Track I - New Faculty and Adjunct Faculty
Track I of the Scholarship of Teaching is an 8-week program consisting of faculty who are committed to examining and advancing the scholarship of teaching and learning in higher education. Participants will work collaboratively in an atmosphere of mutual respect and collegiality. A selected topical article will be discussed and session presenters will report current research on focused aspects of teaching and learning. Participants will share experiences to enhance teaching skills, improve courses, and resolve instructional challenges.
Session 1: Reflecting on the Scholarship of Teaching
What role does research play in our assumptions about teaching? Consider the impact of research, reflection, and communication on teaching and learning.

Session 2: Understanding Principles of Conflict Resolution
Have you ever wished for a different outcome when dealing with student conflicts? Learn how to turn arguments into discussions through the use of specific listening and responding strategies.

Session 3: Developing Techniques to Combat Stress
Do you ever feel stressed trying to balance life’s demands? Identify stressors and develop coping mechanisms to deal with stress in a healthy manner. retain the information we teach?

Session 4: Applying Cognitive Theory in the Classroom
Why do some students struggle to understand and retain the information we teach? Discover the natural human learning process, and learn how to adapt your teaching methods to help improve student learning.

Session 5: Assessing Student Learning and Teaching Effectiveness
What constitutes a good assessment of student learning? Develop ongoing assessment strategies to help re-focus your teaching and to help students make their learning more effective and efficient.

Do you ever feel that you are working harder in class than the students? Learn to orchestrate learning experiences to center energy on the learner and to strengthen students’ reasoned judgment.
