Track II - For Seasoned Faculty at Lone Star College-Kingwood
Track II of the Scholarship of Teaching is an 8-week program for faculty who have been at Lone Star College-Kingwood for at least one year and who are committed to examining and advancing the scholarship of teaching and learning in higher education. Participants will work collaboratively in an atmosphere of mutual respect and collegiality. Outside speakers will present a selected topical article for discussion and will report current research on focused aspects of teaching and learning. Participants will share experiences to enhance teaching skills, improve courses, and resolve instructional challenges.
Session 1: Reflecting on the Scholarship of Teaching
What role does research play in our assumptions about teaching? Consider the impact of research, reflection, and communication on teaching and learning.
Session 2: Learning Acquisition and Memory
Why do some students have such difficulty learning? Discover the processes by which students acquire and retain new knowledge and consider the implications for teaching.
Session 3: Reinventing Yourself
Are you ready for significant change in some, or all, areas of your life? Discover the old beliefs and attitudes that may prevent you from fulfilling your potential.
Session 4: Developing Methods of Self-Assessment
What are students really learning? Learn to develop on-going assessment techniques that help both teacher and learner gauge the degree to which they understand each other.
Session 5: Transforming Classroom Practices to Encourage Active Learning
How does Active Learning help develop critical thinking skills? Explore alternatives to traditional classroom presentations to expand your repertoire of instructional skills.
Session 6: Teaching the Student of the 21st Century
Do students today differ from those ten or twenty years ago? Learn about the complexity of today’s youth culture and how it impacts student learning.
Session 7: Building a Foundation for Ethical Conduct
Why incorporate ethics into the college classroom? Develop techniques to prepare students to confront life’s complex ethical dilemmas.
Session 8: Pulling It All Together: Ideas for Implementation
What works in the classroom? Share research-based strategies developed to improve teaching and learning.
