Lone Star College-Kingwood Teaching & Learning Center has $5000 in the budget to support 1-2 projects that will enhance instruction and learning. If you have an idea you have wanted to try, seen something at a conference, or know of something another campus is finding successful, please apply for this funding. The fund is to help you implement new ideas. Faculty may need time to prepare for these courses, hire outside help, buy equipment, or may need to visit a college where the idea has been successful. The committee will give preference to department and cross department projects. The grant does NOT pay for adjuncts or overloads.
Example projects might include:
- A Learning Community project where 3 courses are tied together by a common theme. Students sign up for all three. A learning community might be the English, History, and Intro to Computer (or Speech or Government). Students take all three of the courses. The theme in this community might focus on Women's Issues. The readings, research assignments, speeches, etc will center around these issues - and the students may study together and work in groups on projects and special assignments.
- Another project might be business/computer/economics, etc. classes working together to set up a real-life situational project.
- The history classes may want to work on a living history project where students gather information about the community. This information could be put into a website. A project like this may grow from one semester to another. See http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/vshadow2/choosepart.html or http://www.dcn.davis.ca.us/vme/vo/
- Music, history, art, literature, and other courses may want to enhance the American Cultural History library website through their studies. This site studies culture through the twentieth century - by decade . Since it was done locally, it would be an excellent project for students to build on. http://kclibrary.nhmccd.edu/decades.html Money might be spent to get a person to do the web part of this project.
- Science may go in with Speech or a computer course to work on projects.
Well, you get the idea. I'm sure there are ideas you have wanted to try, if you only had the money and the time. Let us help you. Committee members will be happy to discuss this.
