Attendance
The faculty believes that experiences in the classroom and laboratory cannot be adequately duplicated if a student is absent excessively. In addition, the Cosmetology Program is designed to each good work habits, such as attendance. Regular attendance is mandatory in order to successfully complete the program. The Texas Cosmetology Commission requires the completion of 1500 clock hours for an operator’s course in order to qualify to test for the State Board Examination. Passing this exam allows one to become a licensed operator certified by the state.
The Lone Star College-Kingwood Cosmetology program provides for 1504 clock hours during the 12-month program. A full day of instruction equates to 8 clock hours. Students must maintain regular attendance to guarantee completion of 1500 clock hours by the end of the third semester.
There are three semesters in the program, beginning with Fall semester which has a total of 576 clock hours, the Spring semester has 576 clock hours, and the Summer semester has 352 clock hours. The combined total of all three semesters is 1504 clock hours.
Each semester total must be met in order to proceed to the next semester.
FALL = 576 hours
SPRING = 576 hours
SUMMER = 352 hours
Any absences in the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters exceeding three days (24 hours) is considered excessive and will place a student on probation for the remainder of the semester. If absences should exceed 4 days (32 hours) in one semester the student will be withdrawn from the program for excessive absences. All missed hours must be made up to a minimum total of 576 clock hours for Fall semester and 576 clock hours for Spring semester totaling 1152 clock hours in order to proceed to the third semester (Summer).
One 8-hour make-up class will be offered at the end of each month in the Fall semester (Sept., Oct., Nov., Dec.) and the Spring semester (Feb., Mar., April, May). One 8-hour make-up session will be offered in the Summer semester at the end of June and one 8-hour make-up session at the end of July and will require the students to maintain their attendance until the completion of the course (1500 clock hours).
PROFESSIONALISM
Professionalism includes positive interpersonal interaction (social manners, attitude, and teamwork) with instructors, other students, and customers; dependability in assuming student role; appropriate use of constructive criticism, recognition of limitations and areas needing assistance; and professional appearance (proper dress and personal grooming is required at all times). Professionalism is tied to attendance. The student will not be allowed to clock in unless he/she is in uniform and properly groomed.
