Lone Star College-Kingwood was one of eight community colleges selected nationwide to participate in the American Association of Community College’s Broadening Horizons through Service Learning project, part of a national initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service and its Learn and Serve American program. Over the next three years, under the direction of Dr. Brian Shmaefsky, Lone Star College-Kingwood will plan, develop and implement a permanent and institutionalized service-learning program on its campus.

Nanotechnology
As part of the Governor’s Nanotechnology Initiative, Lone Star College-Kingwood and five partner community colleges were awarded $160,000 in funding from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to develop statewide nanotechnology curriculum for community and technical colleges that include a distance-learning component. Another $50,000 has been awarded to develop course descriptions, learning outcomes, and syllabi.

Lone Star College-Kingwood’s Dr. Terry Sawma (Vice-President of Continuing Education and Student Support Services) is leading the effort on this state-wide project and recently partnered with Del Mar College in Corpus Christi and numerous other regional community colleges, universities, and businesses in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Louisiana to apply to become a regional nanotechnology node to the National Advanced Technology Education Center (Nano-ATE) at Penn State University. Go Center Grant and THE G-FORCE!!
Lone Star College-Kingwood was awarded $15,187 in funding from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the College for All Texans to create a network of college students who will mentor high school students at Humble ISD and Splendora ISD in North Houston. The purpose of the project is to assist high school students in developing and following a personal high school graduation plan as well as a college plan. Under the direction of Claudet Rodriguez, Dual Credit Program Coordinator at Lone Star College-Kingwood, many college students have already volunteered to participate and will be visiting the local high schools in the fall.

Datatel Grant
Lone Star College-Kingwood Technology Professor and Microsoft Trainer of the Year, Lone Star College-Kingwood received a Datatel Distributed Learning grant to implement a new teaching format, which includes video-based technology. This technology is designed to educate and train students who require maximum flexibility in their education schedules but prefer the traditional instructor-led educational format.

This project has received multi-year funding from the Rockwell Foundation and the Knox Foundation to enhance services and projects for the college’s honor students. Disabled Golfers' Grant
This project has received funding from the Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation to help Lone Star College-Kingwood develop and implement free “Learn to Golf” clinics for individuals with disabilities. The latest clinic was hosted by Lone Star College-Kingwood and Park Plaza Hospital. Instructor Bob Wilson of the National Amputee Golf Association was on hand for the two-day clinic. The clinic’s first day was devoted to teaching Occupational and Physical Therapists how to motivate and assist their disabled patients who wish to learn to play golf. The clinic’s second day was devoted to teaching disabled patients (with the help of their therapist) how to play golf.

Developmental Studies
This project was funded in 2003 by the Houston Endowment Foundation to assist Lone Star College System (including Lone Star College-Kingwood) in developing and implementing a comprehensive developmental studies program at each of its colleges for student success.
