Spring Awards
The PoeTree: Daniel Coleman - $100
Daniel will hang 52 carefully selected poems (laminated) from the small willow outside the Health Science Building. He hopes to inspire appreciation in poetry. Daniel is responsible for past innovative projects like sidewalk poems and Thoreau’s cabin. We applaud his creativity and dedication to student learning.
Technology Collaborative Lab Project: Myrna Maurer and Mary Johnson - $1050
Myrna will use her grant money to purchase a variety of hardware devices so students in Introduction to Computers can experience hands-on use of these peripherals as they learn about them. She has currently been bringing her own home devices for students to see and use. The grant, with matching department funds, will allow for the creation of 3 boxes containing such devices as digital recorder, microphones, web cameras, digital tablet, for check out by instructors. Students will be able to install and use these devices rather than just looking at a picture and description in the textbook.
A Weekend with Carlisle Floyd: Todd Miller - $1000
Todd is bringing famed composer Carlisle Floyd to Lone Star College-Kingwood for a weekend on the eve of his 80th birthday. Students, community members, faculty, staff, and others will participate in this prestigious event. Todd has supported this event with a large grant from community sources. The committee is pleased to be able to contribute to this important occasion. Mark your calendar for May 7th, the celebration concert. Todd will announce other events soon.
Second Nature: Mari Omori and Kay Nguyen - $750
If you were at Conference Day last month, you probably saw the large bamboo sculpture displayed outside at NHC. Mari and Kay are instrumental in getting this sculpture, Second Nature, here at Kingwood. This is a wonderful opportunity for all of our students. Since the mini-grant can’t fund personnel, Mari and Kay may need a little help. Call Mari if you would like to volunteer your services.
Environmental Quality Public Education Kiosk: Brian Shmaefsky, Betsy Morgan, and Jan Benjamin - $800
Brian and friends will create a kiosk with pamphlets, internet access, environmental reports and monitoring equipment for student awareness. The funding will cover the cost of preparing the kiosk. Service learning and other science students will monitor this research project and man the permanent kiosk, to be located in the foyer of the HSB.
New Ticket Software and supplies for Visual and Performing Arts: Eric Skiles - $200
The committee, supporting the fine arts program, approved this mini-grant that will allow the purchase of software licensing to create tickets for fine arts events.
