Dental Hygiene

Dental Hygiene is a 2-year program leading to an Associate of Applied Science. Graduates are eligible to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam and the Western Region Examining Board Clinical Exam. Successful completion of both exams are required to be a Registered Dental Hygienist.

Program Mission and Goals

The mission of the Lone Star College-Kingwood Dental Hygiene Program is to produce competent graduates whose technical skills, acumen and interpersonal communication skills make them an asset to any employer and the community.

The goals for the program are to facilitate the development of professional, ethical and competent dental hygienists who exhibit the following:

  • a working knowledge of dental hygiene skills

  • sound professional judgement

  • the ability to provide appropriate and effective patient care

  • knowledge of legal standards reflected in the delivery of patient care

  • ethical standards reflected in the delivery of patient care

  • an understanding of research design and methodology

  • the ability to critically evaluate scientific literature

  • a commitment to lifelong learning

  • an understanding of the evolving health needs of all segments of society

  • a commitment of professional development through an active role in professional associations

  • effective communication skills

  • a commitment to disease prevention and health promotion in the community through educational and/or clinical services

  • a desire to work within the surrounding community
